Cutover residue calculator detailsJavascript is not currently enabled on your browser. Please enable it in the settings of your browser to use this interactive tool. This calculator is designed to estimate the volume of residual wood left on the cutover after a harvest given the amount of logs harvested. Landing residues are treated here. The volume of residues generally depends on two factors: the harvesting methodology and the quality of the crop. Hauler based harvesting methods tend to leave more residues on the cutover than ground based harvesting. In addition, the higher the quality of the crop the fewer the residues left behind. The following table shows the percentages of stem and branch as a percentage of the merchantable volume (written as stem% , branch%) for the various options.
This data is based on Pinus Radiata plantation harvesting operations in the Central North Island. Notes: The merchantable volume per ha can range from a very low 400 m3 per ha to a very high 850 m3 per ha. Cutover residues from hauler systems may be very expensive to access.
