Putting cardboard boxes to the test

Packaging for export products needs to maintain its strength and shape under stress and in conditions of changing temperature and humidity. Absorbing and desorbing moisture can result in permanent changes in the paperboard structure that can ultimately lead to boxes collapsing.

Lou Sherman, Services and Technical Leader talks to Alison Balance of RNZ’s Our Changing World about Scion’s WHITE Room.

The WHITE Room is designed to replicate the effects of humidity and temperature on boxes under stress in the chilled distribution chain. Knowing the conditions under which packaging is likely to fail allows manufacturers of packaging materials and packaging to design materials fit for purpose.

“Scion’s facility is unique,” says Lou. “We are working with some of the country’s lead exporters to make sure their products reach the market in perfect condition.”
