Scion offers consulting services to assist the implemention of renewable bioenergy using plant residues.

Bioenergy is the conversion of biomass (i.e. plant material like wood chips) into useful forms of energy. The most common example of this is burning wood for heat. By using locally sourced and renewable forms of energy, New Zealand can reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels and protect industry against electricity shortages, as well as decreasing carbon emissions.

The forest industries generate a renewable energy resource alongside their core business of growing and processing timber. Scion is working with government and industry to promote the use of biomass - wood waste from forest operations and wood processing - as an energy source.

The Bioenergy team at Scion offers the following capabilities:

  • Resource analysis - Determining the viability and cost-effectiveness of resource supply to a bioenergy plant. Expertise includes GIS analysis on transportation costs and regional resource availability.
  • Energy Systems analysis - Ensuring bioenergy plants are designed to operate with maximum efficiency.
  • Environmental analysis - Understanding the overall economic and environmental impacts of bioenergy systems.

The Bioenergy team is involved in a number of significant initiatives to implement bioenergy systems. Examples of these are invluded in the following links:

In addition, Scion was a founding member of the Bioenergy Association of New Zealand, which was set up to promote the bioenergy industry and coordinate its development in New Zealand. BANZ promotes the economic, environmental and social benefits of bioenergy along with disseminating information to government, industry and the public.

Per Nielsen is a member of the executive board and works with this group to further bioenergy uptake in New Zealand. For more information on BANZ, visit www.bioenergy.org.nz

Bioenergy Knowledge Centre

The Scion Bioenergy Group is lead developer of the Bioenergy Knowledge Centre, an initiative funded by the Forest Industry Development Agenda Bioenergy Programme to promote the use of Bioenergy from woody biomass in New Zealand.

The Bioenergy Knowledge Centre consists of a web site and  a call centre:

Website - The Bioenergy Gateway contains specialised information and tools to assist various sectors determine the benefits of bioenergy. This website also provides pointers to assist with the practical implementation of bioenergy projects.

Call Centre - The Bioenergy Hotline: 0800 Bioenergy (0800 246363), which enables callers to speak directly to experts in a wide range of bioenergy topics. This service provides general bioenergy information and specific advice on bioenergy projects.
