About

Haydon is a soil scientist who specialises in understanding the impacts of forest management practices on the environment, with current emphasis on soil erosion. Since joining Scion in 2005, he has studied how forest management practices effect soil carbon stocks. Haydon has been involved in improving the New Zealand Soil Carbon Monitoring System used by the government to meet its reporting obligations under the Kyoto Protocol.

Qualifications

PhD (Earth Sciences) Waikato University, New Zealand - 2005
MSc (Earth Sciences) Waikato University, New Zealand -1998
BSocSc (Geography and Earth Sciences) Waikato University, New Zealand - 1996

Research capabilities

Professional specialty is in forest pedology, soil carbon, and land use management.  Recent research is focused on soil carbon stock change over time following forest harvesting, establishing the upper limits of soil carbon storage in New Zealand soils, methodology development for soil carbon stock inventory (e.g. accounting for mass-movement erosion in the Soil CMS and methodological framework development for improvements to the NZ Soil CMS), the role of forestry in mitigating hill-country erosion, investigating the impacts of forest management practices (e.g. harvest residue management and site preparation) on soil carbon stocks, and soil and site resource assessments for Māori landowners.

Career highlights

  • Morice Fieldes Award for Best Ph.D. Thesis, New Zealand Society of Soil Science (2005)
  • Sir Theodore Rigg Award for Best Masterate Thesis, New Zealand Society of Soil Science (1999)
  • University of Waikato Postgraduate Scholarship (1998)
