Plant Identification & Information Services

Services include:

  • Identification of tree species that occur in New Zealand, especially eucalypts and conifers
  • Identification of native and adventive plants from the Bay of Plenty and central North Island
  • Provision of botanical information from the herbarium database
  • Permanent storage of voucher specimens for forest records such as understorey biodiversity reports

For plant identification at the herbarium you need to send:

A specimen, including, where possible:

  • a shoot at least 20 cm long with attached leaves,
  • flowers and fruit including seeds,
  • a small sample of bark,
  • a description of the tree.
  • Photographs of the tree, especially the bark, are also useful.

Examples:

Conifer samples should include:

  • a shoot with leaves (needles) attached,
  • leaf buds,
  • two or three mature cones,
  • a small piece of bark.
Eucalypt samples should include:
  • flower buds
  • mature seed capsules still on shoots
  • mature and juvenile leaves
  • bark
  • notes on whether the bark changes in colour or texture, and if so, how far up the tree.
