    NZ Wood Timber Design Awards

    Scion is proud to announce it has signed on as a category sponsor for the 2012 NZ Wood Timber Design Awards. The awards, which recognise excellence across functionality and aesthetics, are open to all New Zealand resident architects, builders, architectural designers, engineers, students and other designers in timber.

    The Scion Sustainability Award is for entries that show a commitment to sustainability where there is a focus on timber, the carbon footprint, location of supply, energy efficiency etc.

    Jane Arnott, CEO NZ Wood says, “The versatility of timber offers infinite possibilities for professionals keen to blend beauty and form. From curves to filigree, veneers to engineered timber beams only timber can excite, challenge and change to meet every landscape and every client.”

    The call for entries is open until Friday 22 June. A shortlist will then be created and the awards evening will take place on Tuesday 9 October.

    NZ Bio 2011 : Enabling Successful Bio Enterprise

    Venue: SKYCITY Convention Centre, Auckland

    The NZBIO2011 theme : Enabling Successful Bio Enterprise, highlights the broadening impact of biotechnology across many industries and its growing importance to our economic, social and environmental future. The conferences will explore new business opportunities across the spectrum of the bioeconomy and will cover all aspects of the life sciences from agriculture, food and health applications through to industrial and environmental biotechnology and the development of second generation biofuel technologies.

    Scion’s Dr Trevor Stuthridge (Group Manager Sustainable Design) will chair the conference session titled 'Biofuels and Bioproducts from Direct Cellulose Fermentation', which will feature three Scion scientists  Dr Anne-Marie Smit, Dr Tim Strabala and Dr Daniel Gapes.

    A second session, 'Commercialising Bioproducts Across the Globe', will be chaired by Dr Elspeth McRae (Group Manager Bioproduct Development), and will include comment from Dr Alan Fernyhough.

    In conjunction with the University of Auckland School of Architecture and Planning, the annual Scion Timber Design Awards acknowledge excellent design in timber from studio projects. Architectural students are encouraged to explore designing buildings with timber and to better understand how to design using timber materials.

    Winning with Wood

    Winning With Wood is a seven week festival of forest and wood-related activities around New Zealand in September and October 2011, and is part of the REAL New Zealand Showcase. The festival highlights innovation in all aspects of the forestry and wood products sector.

    Scion is 'Winning with Wood' by being part of the National Wood Innovation Showcase and will hold tours at the Rotorua campus twice a week for six weeks starting on Tuesday 6 September.

    The tours will give visitors insight into the science and research that takes place in the areas of forestry management and protection, wood products and processing, bioenergy and much more. For more information on the tours, contact simone.walker@scionresearch.com

    New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre conference

    Venue: Travelodge, Palmerston North

    'Moving towards solutions' is the theme of the 2nd Annual Science Conference of the New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre (NZAGRC). The Conference brings together New Zealand scientists, international experts, policy makers and industry representatives to discuss New Zealand’s research programme to deliver and implement effective, practical solutions to mitigate agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

    The NZAGRC is a highly effective collaboration between eight leading New Zealand research providers (AgResearch, DairyNZ, Landcare Research, Scion, Massey University, Plant and Food Research, Lincoln University and NIWA) and the industry-led Pastoral Greenhouse Gas Research Consortium (PGgRc). Scientists from a number of the Centre’s partner organisations feature in the conference programme which, combined with international experts from the UK, Ireland and Australia, is certain to provide a stimulating day.

    Venue: Waiariki Institute of Technology, School of Forestry, Rotorua

    Following on from the success of the first Forestry Geographical Information Systems (GIS) conference held in 2010, Scion is proud to announce the second conference which will be held on Wednesday 18 April in the iconic School of Forestry complex at Waiariki Institute of Technology in Rotorua.

    Topics to be presented on include cable harvesting, LiDAR, ArcGIS v10.1, GIS for ETS, climate change and environmental data sets.
