  This Fire Technology Transfer Note summarises a report by Hart and Langer (2011) that suggests methods to mitigate the risks of human caused wildfires. The recommendations outlined in this summary have emerged from a comprehensive literature review and qualitative research with stakeholders. Although the latter primarily had a Canterbury focus, the issues and resolutions identified have national relevance.

  Vegetation fire behaviour at the Waiomu Fire on the 28th of January 2008 is analysed in terms of fire suppression planning. The information was collected as part of a case study for the Intermediate Fire Behaviour qualification. The case study describes the interaction between the fire environment factors of fuels, weather and topography to explain the fire behaviour observed at the 2008 Waiomu fire. The case study also demonstrates the use of the "Fire Behaviour Toolkit" calculator, and how the calculator can be used to compare observed versus predicted fire behaviour.
