The JOURNAL is edited and produced at Scion (the New Zealand Forest Research Institute Limited) in Rotorua, on behalf of the forestry interests of New Zealand. It began publication in May 1971.

The scope of the JOURNAL includes production forestry, protection forestry, pathology, entomology, wood quality and processing, timber engineering, composite wood products, and biomaterials research.

Each annual volume consists of three issues. Full indexes appear in the final issue of each volume.
