General
Papers eligible for publication can cover a wide range of subjects but must relate to research into the forestry and biomaterials areas. Authors are required to indicate the main area of their research — economics / marketing; environmental physiology; fibre processing; forest health; genetics / tree breeding; genomics / biotechnology; maturation physiology; New Zealand indigenous forestry; plantation silviculture; soils and nutrition; tissue culture; wood products; wood quality.
Four types of paper are acceptable for publication: articles, notes, letters, and book reviews.
Contributions from outside New Zealand are welcome provided they deal with matters of concern to those connected with research relating to forestry, timber, or biomaterials in New Zealand and the south-west Pacific.
Manuscripts submitted for publication must be accompanied by a statement that the paper has not been published or offered for publication elsewhere. However, the publication of an abstract or summary elsewhere may be disregarded.
Manuscripts in electronic format can be sent to judy.griffith@scionresearch.com as email attachments. Alternatively, they may be submitted on disc or sent in hard copy to: The Editor, New Zealand Journal of Forestry Science, Private Bag 3020, Rotorua, New Zealand.

Typescript
Manuscripts may be submitted in hard copy, or in electronic format (as pdf files or Word documents) which will speed up the refereeing process. If in hard copy, three copies must be submitted. A left-hand margin of 3 cm is required; 11⁄2 spacing should be used throughout. After refereeing (and revision if required) the manuscript should be resubmitted in electronic format as a Word document — see also notes in “Tables” and “Figures” sections below.
Titles of papers should be brief and, where possible, should start with a word which is useful for indexing. Avoid titles beginning with “The”, “A”, “Some”, “New”, “Effects”, “Influence”, and “Study”, for instance.
Give full postal addresses of Authors. Where there are multiple authors, indicate which will be responsible for communications relating to the paper (“corresponding author”) and provide an email address if available.
Each article must have an Abstract suitable for reproducing by abstracting journals; the abstract should be informative rather than descriptive, and must give the principal results. It should not contain citations of references.
Up to 10 Keywords should be provided with each paper, to assist the reader and to facilitate information retrieval. The main subjects or concepts should be listed first. Specific terms, such as names of taxa or chemicals, may be included; scientific names are preferred to common names. The CAB Thesaurus and the FPRS Thesaurus of Forest Products Terms should be used as sources of standard terms.
Spelling, capitalisation, hyphenation, punctuation, abbreviations, etc., should be according to the New Zealand Government Printer’s “Style Book”, the Oxford Dictionary, and British Standard 1991.
Metrication
Metric units of the Système International (SI) are to be used in all manuscripts submitted for publication. Authors who are unfamiliar with the SI units should consult NZS 6501P (1971), “The International System (SI) Units and their Application”, issued by the Standards Association of New Zealand. If measurements are converted from Imperial units to SI metric units, the conversion factors should be stated.
The SI unit for mass is spelt “kilogram” not “kilogramme”, and “gram” should be used in all decimal multiples and sub-multiples of this unit, e.g., milligram. The official spelling adopted for the SI unit of length is “metre” not “meter”.
To avoid confusion with commas used as decimal markers in many European countries, a comma should not be used as a “thousand marker”. Digits should be grouped in threes separated by a space not a comma, counting both to the left and right of the decimal point, e.g., 14 236 504.217 83. Four digits do not require a space, e.g., 9285. Decimal points must always be preceded by a cypher, e.g., 0.37 not .37.
Tables
Tables should be kept to a minimum, although they can sometimes replace a much greater area of text. Tables should be typed on separate pages at the end of the text and numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals. Each Table must have a title and be cited in the text. Units of measure should be placed at the head of each column. Bear in mind the limitations of the Journal page size when designing Tables (maximum area 124196 mm).
Figures
Only Figures essential to elucidate the text can be published; if colour printing is required, the cost will be charged back to the author. Figures are required in electronic form (tif, jpg) when the galley proofs are returned. They should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals regardless of whether they are photographs or line drawings. Each Figure must be cited in the text and the order of first reference must follow the consecutive numbers of the Figures.
The Figure caption should not be shown on the Figure itself; all captions should be listed together at the end of the paper. Lettering and line thickness should be chosen so that they are clearly legible and of consistent size if the Figures are reduced for final printing.
References
All references must be cited in the text by author’s name and year, e.g., “(Jones & Smith 1984)” or “… as stated by Jones & Smith (1984)”. All references should be listed at the end of the paper in alphabetical order of the authors’ names. Titles of periodicals should be in full and, together with the volume number, are to be in italics. Titles of periodical articles are printed in lower case; book titles have initial capitals and are in quote marks and the name of the publisher and the place of publication should be given. Unpublished reports are not acceptable as references.
Fair Copying Declaration and Reproduction of Abstracts
The Journal subscribes to the Fair Copying Declaration issued by the Royal Society (London). Reproduction of authors’ abstracts, with acknowledgment, is authorised.
Page Chargers
There are no page charges incurred by authors publishing in this Journal.
Reprints
Reprints are available in electronic form. Approximate costs are given on the Order Form which is sent to the author with the galley proofs; the Order Form should be returned to the editor with the galley proofs.
