Genetically Modified Forests: From Stone Age to Modern Biotechnology by Rowland D. Burdon and William J. Libby
The term biotechnology came into common usage in the 1980s. Broadly defined, it is anything that combines biology and technology, but it commonly refers to genetic manipulation of plants and animals. And it has a long history; the genetics of many tree species have been purposefully modified for more than 5,000 years.
In Genetically Modified Forests, the authors trace the history of tree improvement, helping the reader to understand both human effect on tree genetics and the real and imagined concerns of genetic engineering.
Dr Rowland Burdon has been a researcher with Scion since 1964. William J. Libby was a professor at the University of California-Berkeley from 1961 until 1994. [P124], $17.00

Measuring Success - By Elizabeth Miller and Thomas Paul Current interest in restoration of the natural character of New Zealand’s sand dunes is focused on revegetation. Well-organised vegetation monitoring programmes are required, firstly to assess the effectiveness of revegetation projects, secondly to increase the interest and satisfaction experienced by group members, and to make efficient use of community time and resources. This bulletin provides guideline for these monitoring programmes.

Paulownia - by Ian Barton, Ian Nicholas and Chris Ecroyd Ensis has produced a bulletin that summarises knowledge about the growing and management of Paulownia in New Zealand. Paulownia has a long history of cultivation in China and was introduced to New Zealand in about 1860. A few successful plantations have been established in this country, but many attempts failed. This handbook shows that Paulownia can be regarded as a multi-purpose tree with potential for use as a short-rotation timber species when grown under specific New Zealand conditions. To obtain a copy of the book contact publications@scionresearch.com. [B231], $22.50
