Building science for sustainable living

FoyerThe built environment team offers expertise in many different aspects of buildings and their construction, as well as infrastructure and urban spaces.

The team offers consultancy services and research capability in six core areas:

  • Consumer behaviour - studying consumer behaviour and social trends that are likely to drive future changes.
  • Scenario planning - forecasting possible futures of what the world may be like, based on current trends.
  • Trade access for wood products - facilitating better market access by helping to develop appropriate building codes and standards.
  • Sustainable retrofitting - understanding how residential homes can be upgraded to modern living standards.
  • Life cycle assessment - calculating the environmental impacts of a product or service over its whole life cycle.
  • Product development - providing R&D services to manufacturers of new building products and systems.

The Built Environment team brings together expertise across the whole range of issues included in building and construction, from acoustics to building codes. It interfaces with a large and buoyant market with recent government emphasis on sustainability and wood design.

The establishment of the BEACON Consortium, in which the Scion Group is a shareholder, was a major development to bring technology innovation to the building sector.
