Urban Forest Futures New Zealand / Te aka tāngaengae – Pūtaringamotu
Scion, Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research, the University of Canterbury, and Christchurch City Council have come together to host the first ever Urban Forest Symposium in New Zealand. Proudly sponsored by Orbica Limited.
Researchers, mana whenua, urban planners and developers, council and government representatives, and relevant stakeholders are invited to join us in discussing how best to address the challenges in establishing and maintaining urban green and blue spaces in Aotearoa.
This event will bring together a broad array of experts to identify the most important issues surrounding green spaces and brainstorm novel solutions to these problems. We want to ensure we can expand our populations sustainably and thrive alongside nature far into the future.
Conference venue: Canterbury University, Ōtautahi (Christchurch)
Cost: Free (spaces limited)
If you would like to join the waitlist, please contact Tom Carlin.
The event will be held over two days:
Conference style talks from invited speakers, covering a range of topics from the current state of urban forests in New Zealand and internationally, to the benefits, challenges, and novel tools and techniques for managing and planning effective urban green spaces.
Field trips with local experts around iconic Christchurch urban forest sites, highlighting culturally significant rongoā as well as areas of ecological success. Open to anyone who has registered for Day 1.
The aims of the event are to:
- foster a broad network of varied experts to help address current and future challenges in the Urban Forest space
- develop a five-year plan for urban forest research, and
- understand how to better integrate green spaces into urban environments as the population expands.
