Plastics NZ awards and launch of Plastics Roadmap

Scion scored several accolades at the 2019 New Zealand Plastics Industry Design Awards.  

The ecofriendly bioadhesive technology, Ligate™, won the Research and New Innovation category, while Scion’s work and partnership with EPL on biodegradable vine net clips was also acknowledged earning highly commended in the categories of Best Environmental Product and Best Supplier Partnership.  

Speaking at the Plastics NZ Conference, Associate Minister for the Environment, Hon Eugenie Sage, announced a new Scion-led project ‘Roadmap for New Zealand’s New Plastics Economy’. The Roadmap is based on the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s The New Plastics Economy, which gives a global vision for the future of the plastics economy and is already being adopted internationally.  Funded by the Waste Minimisation Fund, the Scion-led project will  
  • Customise the global vision of the New Plastics Economy for New Zealand  
  • Be a New Zealand specific guide for NGOs and government departments 
  • Outline the current barriers, challenges and opportunities that the New Zealand plastic industry faces to move towards a circular New Plastics Economy model  
  • Recommend actions to develop alongside industry 

Scion’s Biopolymer and Chemicals Science Leader, Dr Florian Graichen also spoke at the conference which took place in Queenstown, on 16-17 May.
