Scion has developed a PFAS testing service that caters to New Zealand manufacturers to ensure PFAS in food packaging is below 50 ppm.
We have the capability to test large and small batches efficiently, analysing total fluorine (TF) using Ion Chromatography (IC). The TF method has high sensitivity and is commonly used to screen for PFAS-containing material. Regulations worldwide are increasingly stringent, with permissible levels tightening and thresholds varying across regions. Levels below 50 ppm are considered acceptable globally, and our PFAS testing has a lower limit of detection of 10 ppm of fluorine in solid sample.
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are synthetic chemicals resistant to water, oil, and heat that are commonly used in food packaging, cookware, clothing, furniture and other consumer products. These chemicals build up in the environment and mammals and, when present in humans in high levels, can cause health problems such as liver damage, immune issues, fertility problems and cancer.

Frequently asked questions
Please read through the FAQs before contacting us.
We are able to analyse for TF.
Total fluorine (TF) can be used as an indicator of PFAS.
Not with this service. Please get in touch with us and we can put you in contact with the appropriate service.
Our detection limit is 10 ppm in solid sample. Generally, 50 ppm is the limit for products as an indicator of non-intentionally added PFAS.
We are not a certified laboratory; the method has gone through a round robin validation, and a research report containing results is offered.
5 grams minimum.
Depending on sample number and demand, in general 10 working days of receiving sample. Should you require urgent service, please get in touch with us for pricing and timing.
