Scion has developed a PFAS testing service that caters to New Zealand manufacturers to ensure PFAS in food packaging is below 100ppm.
We have the capability to test large and small batches efficiently, analysing total organic fluoride (TOF). The TOF is an indicator of PFAS. Regulations worldwide are increasingly stringent, with permissible levels tightening and thresholds varying across regions. Levels below 100ppm are considered acceptable globally, but in some regions, such as Denmark and California, they enforce stricter limits of 20ppm and 10ppm, respectively. Our PFAS testing has a lower limit of detection of 10ppm (solid sample).
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are synthetic chemicals resistant to water, oil, and heat that are commonly used in food packaging, cookware, clothing, furniture and other consumer products. These chemicals build up in the environment and mammals and, when present in humans in high levels, can cause health problems such as liver damage, immune issues, fertility problems and cancer.
