Scion opens its doors to the public

28 February 2011

Rotorua locals interested in learning what ice-cream and rockets have in common will need to keep Saturday 12 March free for Crown Research Institute Scion’s community open day.

‘Science in the Park’ is a free public event that provides everyone with the opportunity to learn more about modern science and find out how Scion’s 300 scientists spend their day.

Visitors are invited to come along between 9am – 3pm to Scion’s tree-lined grounds and experience the interactive displays, participate in science experiments, and take a guided tour.

Scion Acting Chief Executive Officer Ms Chelydra Percy says Science in the Park is all about helping the community gain a better understanding of Scion’s work and the contribution local science makes to New Zealand.

“It’s about bringing science alive for people. Science is everywhere and it impacts on everything we see and do from the materials we use, the technologies we enjoy, our health and our environment,” says Chelydra.

“This event is our way of opening our doors and encouraging people to see the amazing work that goes on right here in Rotorua.

“More than 30 displays, demonstrations and talks will be included in the programme, along with the opportunity to interact with scientists directly.”

The activities on offer at Science in the Park will appeal to all ages, such as seeing what a strawberry’s DNA looks like, taking a Carbon Tour to learn how planting a tree can help with climate change, or finding out how plastics can be made from plants.

The programme also includes prize draws for children and a photography competition for Bay of Plenty students.

Chelydra says Scion’s previous Science in the Park events held in 2007 and 2009 were hugely successful, attended by thousands of local people.

“This year we have a range of new displays and activities to share with the public so bring along your picnic, your friends and family and learn more about the world around you.”
