Science impact recognised at Rotorua Business Award

More than 75 years of science and innovation were celebrated last Saturday night as Scion, which is now part of the New Zealand Institute of Bioeconomy Science, received the Outstanding Contribution to Rotorua award at the annual Tompkins Wake Rotorua Business Awards.

Rotorua Business Chamber CEO Melanie Short says this is a fantastic example of how Rotorua’s business and innovation community can create impact far beyond the region. “The work happening here strengthens the local economy, supports innovation and showcases the global potential of New Zealand’s science-based industries.”

The awards are a celebration of Rotorua’s vibrant business community, she says – recognising organisations and individuals who demonstrate innovation, resilience and excellence while bringing together business leaders, sponsors and community members for an evening of connection and collaboration.

Scion Group CEO Julian Elder accepted the award on behalf of Scion, with the category sponsored by Rotorua Lakes Council. Representatives of Ngā Hapū e Toru also attended, reflecting the strong partnership between Scion and mana whenua.

“We’re honoured the organisation has been recognised for its contribution to shaping New Zealand’s bio-based future,” Julian says. “This achievement reflects the dedication of our teams and partners working across science and industry to create a more sustainable, circular economy and to deliver solutions with global impact.

“Receiving the Outstanding Contribution to Rotorua award is especially meaningful. Rotorua is home to one of our key innovation hubs, and the work done here contributes to partnerships and technologies that benefit communities across New Zealand and beyond.”

Earlier this year, Scion merged with AgResearch, Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research and Plant & Food Research to form the New Zealand Institute of Bioeconomy Science. This strengthens collaboration across New Zealand’s leading science organisations to accelerate impact in the bioeconomy.

Scion also sponsored the Innovation and Technology category at the business awards. Cetogenix, a company born from a Scion-led collaboration, won this category – reflecting the impact of science-industry partnerships.
